Case Study: Shilling Robotics
UPDATE:
As of September 2007, Schilling Robotics leads the
industry in both sate-of-the-art robotic arms and ROVs.
Since
its founding in 1985, Schilling Robotics has designed and
manufactured teleoperated manipulator systems and associated
equipment for both subsea and terrestrial applications. In
the past several years, the company has increased its focus
on equipment designed for subsea applications. After becoming
an ALSTOM company (thus gaining access to new research and
development funds), President Tyler Schilling saw an opportunity
to use his companys core strengths to enter the market
for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). He knew the formula
for successful market entry would require both extreme specialization
(to create innovative technical solutions) and complete integration
of parts (to create a simple, reliable, and cost-effective
product). He also understood the human side of creating a
successful next-generation product: that Schilling employees
and teams would, as never before, have to both specialize
as subsystems experts and integrate for a total solution.
Schilling
partnered with Outside Insights to build an organization-wide
conversation to prepare for and succeed with the project.
Beginning with an executive retreat, Outside Insights reiterated
the core philosophies that lead to success at Schilling: innovation,
quality, and customer service. That session was followed up
with coaching for executives and managers and retreats designed
to highlight the company's success elements and provide a
chance to practice the behaviors that lead to success. Additional
customized meetings were designed at key project junctures
to support the integration of individuals and teams through
candid conversations.
Schillings new ROV completed its first open-water test
in March 2000, and has orders for units far beyond planned
expectations. Outside Insights continues to work with Schilling
Robotics to sustain its focus and alignment as the company
continues to grow.
"I know only one formula for product success: deliver
something that is clearly more desirable than any other alternative
for our customers. Outside Insights has helped ensure that
we have the kinds of teams who are prepared and understand
how to do just that."
Tyler Schilling,
President, Schilling Robotics
